Traditional Cherial Wall Hanging Painting

Telangana art is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions, temples, and folk life of the region. This art form began centuries ago in the villages of present-day Telangana, where local artisans, storytellers, and temple painters used colours and symbols to depict the lives of gods, nature, and rural communities.

One of the most famous traditional art forms of Telangana is Cherial Scroll Painting (Cheriyal Art), which originated in the small town of Cherial in Siddipet district.These scrolls were painted by a community of artists known as the Nakashi painters.

The paintings were made using natural colours from stones, tamarind seeds, turmeric, and tree gums, painted on cloth coated with rice starch and tamarind paste. Over time, these evolved from long narrative scrolls into wall hangings, masks, and decorative panels, while still keeping the traditional bright red background, expressive faces, and detailed patterns.
